Is a one-way flight cheaper than half a round trip? Mostly yes — with caveats.

On US domestic routes, a one-way ticket usually costs about half of the comparable round trip — there is no longer a structural penalty. But the cheapest round trip is sometimes cheaper than two cheapest one-ways when an airline bundles pricing on its own network.
