Quick answer
Upgrades reach you four ways: buying a higher cabin outright, bidding through the airline's upgrade auction, complimentary upgrades distributed by loyalty status, or same-day paid upgrades at the gate. Availability is capped by cabin size, so earlier is almost always better.
Exceptions and limits
- Basic economy is usually excluded from complimentary paths
- Bids are only accepted on eligible fares and routes
- Upgrades often do not include the original ticket's seat selection benefits
